अथर्ववेद (कांड 18)
बर्हि॑षदः पितरऊ॒त्यर्वागि॒मा वो॑ ह॒व्या च॑कृमा जु॒षध्व॑म् । त आ ग॒ताव॑सा॒ शन्त॑मे॒नाधा॑ नः॒शं योर॑र॒पो द॑धात ॥ (५१)
हे यज्ञ में आए हुए एवं कुशों पर बैठे हुए पितरो! तुम हमारी रक्षा करने के लिए हमारे सामने आओ. ये हवियां तुम्हारे निमित्त हैं. तुम इन का सेवन करो. तुम अपने कल्याणकारी रक्षा साधनों के साथ आओ तथा राग का शमन करने वाले तथा पाप का नाश करने वाले बल को हम में स्थापित करो. (५१)
O ancestors who have come to the yajna and are sitting on the Kushas! You come before us to protect us. These desires are for you. You consume these. You come with your welfare defense tools and establish in us the force that quenches the raga and destroys sin. (51)
