अथर्ववेद (कांड 13)
पूर्वाप॒रं च॑रतो मा॒ययै॒तौ शिशू॒ क्रीड॑न्तौ॒ परि॑ यातोऽर्ण॒वम् । विश्वा॒न्यो भुव॑ना वि॒चष्टे॑ हैर॒ण्यैर॒न्यं ह॒रितो॑ वहन्ति ॥ (११)
सूर्य और चंद्र दोनों बालकों के समान क्रीड़ा करते हुए अपनी शक्ति से ही आगेपीछे चलते हैं और भ्रमण करते हुए सागर तक पहुंच जाते हैं. इन दोनों में एक अर्थात् चंद्र सभी भुवनों को प्रकाशित करता है और दूसरा अर्थात सूर्य सभी ऋतुओं का निर्माण करता हुआ सभी को नवीनता प्रदान करता है. (११)
Both the sun and the moon play like children and walk ahead with their power and travel to the ocean. In both of these, one i.e. the moon illuminates all the bhuvanas and the other means the sun creates all the seasons and gives newness to everyone. (11)
