ऋग्वेद (मंडल 10)
प्रा॒वे॒पा मा॑ बृह॒तो मा॑दयन्ति प्रवाते॒जा इरि॑णे॒ वर्वृ॑तानाः । सोम॑स्येव मौजव॒तस्य॑ भ॒क्षो वि॒भीद॑को॒ जागृ॑वि॒र्मह्य॑मच्छान् ॥ (१)
प्रवण देश में उत्पन्न बड़े-बड़े पासे जुआ खेलने के तख्ते पर इधर-उधर बिखरते हुए मुझे आनंदित करते हैं. जीत-हार में हर्ष-शोक जगाने वाला पासा मुझे उसी प्रकार सुख देता है, जिस प्रकार मुंजवान् पर्वत पर उत्पन्न सोमलता का रस पीकर सुख मिलता है. (१)
The big dice generated in the prone country delight me as they scatter around on the gambling plank. The dice that brings joy and sorrow in victory and defeat gives me happiness in the same way as i get happiness by drinking the juice of somlata produced on mount Munjwan. (1)

न मा॑ मिमेथ॒ न जि॑हीळ ए॒षा शि॒वा सखि॑भ्य उ॒त मह्य॑मासीत् । अ॒क्षस्या॒हमे॑कप॒रस्य॑ हे॒तोरनु॑व्रता॒मप॑ जा॒याम॑रोधम् ॥ (२)
यह पत्नी न मुझसे कभी अप्रसन्न हुई और न इसने कभी मुझसे लज्जा की. यह मेरे मित्रों और मेरे प्रति सुखकारी थी. इस प्रकार सर्वथा अनुकूल पत्नी को भी मैंने एकमात्र पासों के कारण त्याग दिया. (२)
This wife was never displeased with me, nor did she ever shame me; it was pleasant to my friends and to me. Thus, I also abandoned the perfectly friendly wife because of the only dice. (2)

द्वेष्टि॑ श्व॒श्रूरप॑ जा॒या रु॑णद्धि॒ न ना॑थि॒तो वि॑न्दते मर्डि॒तार॑म् । अश्व॑स्येव॒ जर॑तो॒ वस्न्य॑स्य॒ नाहं वि॑न्दामि कित॒वस्य॒ भोग॑म् ॥ (३)
सास जुआ खेलने वाले की निंदा करती है एवं पत्नी उसे छोड़ जाती है. यदि वह धन मांगे तो उसे कोई देने वाला नहीं मिलता. जिस प्रकार बूढ़े घोड़े का कुछ भी मूल्य नहीं लगता, उसी प्रकार मुझ जुआरी का कहीं आदर नहीं होता. (३)
The mother-in-law condemns the gambler and the wife leaves him. If he asks for money, he doesn't get a giver. Just as the old horse seems to have no value at all, so my gambler is not respected anywhere. (3)

अ॒न्ये जा॒यां परि॑ मृशन्त्यस्य॒ यस्यागृ॑ध॒द्वेद॑ने वा॒ज्य१॒॑क्षः । पि॒ता मा॒ता भ्रात॑र एनमाहु॒र्न जा॑नीमो॒ नय॑ता ब॒द्धमे॒तम् ॥ (४)
शक्तिशाली पासे जिस जुआरी के धन को लालच की दृष्टि से देखते हैं, उसकी व्यभिचारिणी पत्नी का दूसरे लोग स्पर्श करते हैं. जुआरी के माता, पिता एवं भाई कर्ज मांगने वालों से कहते हैं-“हम इसे नहीं जानते. इसे बांधकर ले जाओ.” (४)
The powerful dice touch the adulterous wife of the gambler whose wealth is looked at with greed by others. The gambler's parents, fathers, and brothers say to the borrowers, "We don't know this. Tie it up and take it." (4)

यदा॒दीध्ये॒ न द॑विषाण्येभिः परा॒यद्भ्योऽव॑ हीये॒ सखि॑भ्यः । न्यु॑प्ताश्च ब॒भ्रवो॒ वाच॒मक्र॑त॒ँ एमीदे॑षां निष्कृ॒तं जा॒रिणी॑व ॥ (५)
जब मैं निश्चय कर लेता हूं कि जुआ नहीं खेलूंगा, तब मैं आए हुए जुआरी मित्रों को त्याग देता हूं. किंतु जब जुआ खेलने के तख्ते पर फेंके हुए पीले रंग वाले पासे शब्द करते हैं, तब मैं उस स्थान की ओर ऐसे चला जाता हूं, जैसे व्यभिचारिणी स्त्री संकेतस्थान पर पहुंच जाती है. (५)
When I decide not to gamble, I abandon the gambling friends who have come. But when the yellow dice thrown on the gambling board say the words, I go to that place as if the adulterous woman reaches the signage. (5)

स॒भामे॑ति कित॒वः पृ॒च्छमा॑नो जे॒ष्यामीति॑ त॒न्वा॒३॒॑ शूशु॑जानः । अ॒क्षासो॑ अस्य॒ वि ति॑रन्ति॒ कामं॑ प्रति॒दीव्ने॒ दध॑त॒ आ कृ॒तानि॑ ॥ (६)
जुआरी शरीर से दीप्त होकर एवं यह कहता हुआ जुआघर में जाता है कि कौन धन वाला आया है? मैं उसे जीतूंगा. कभी-कभी पासे जुआरी की कामना पूरी करते हैं और कभी उसके विरोधी जुआरी के अनुकूल कर्म धारण करके उसकी इच्छा पूरी करते हैं. (६)
The gambler goes into the gambling house, illuminated by the body and saying, "Who has come to the rich man?" I'll win him. Sometimes dice fulfill the desire of the gambler and sometimes his opponents fulfill his desire by holding the gambler's friendly deeds. (6)

अ॒क्षास॒ इद॑ङ्कु॒शिनो॑ नितो॒दिनो॑ नि॒कृत्वा॑न॒स्तप॑नास्तापयि॒ष्णवः॑ । कु॒मा॒रदे॑ष्णा॒ जय॑तः पुन॒र्हणो॒ मध्वा॒ सम्पृ॑क्ताः कित॒वस्य॑ ब॒र्हणा॑ ॥ (७)
कभी-कभी पासे अंकुश के समान चुभने वाले, हृदय को टुकड़े-टुकड़े करने वाले एवं गरम पदार्थ के समान जलाने वाले बन जाते हैं. पासे जीतने वाले जुआरी के लिए पुत्रजन्म के समान आनंददाता एवं मधु से लिपटे हुए लगते हैं, पर हारने वाले की तो जान निकाल लेते हैं. (७)
Sometimes the dice become stingers like curbs, tearing the heart to pieces and burning like hot substances. For the gambler who wins the dice, the son seems to be as happy as birth and wrapped with honey, but the loser takes the life of the loser. (7)

त्रि॒प॒ञ्चा॒शः क्री॑ळति॒ व्रात॑ एषां दे॒व इ॑व सवि॒ता स॒त्यध॑र्मा । उ॒ग्रस्य॑ चिन्म॒न्यवे॒ ना न॑मन्ते॒ राजा॑ चिदेभ्यो॒ नम॒ इत्कृ॑णोति ॥ (८)
सच्चे धर्म वाले सविता देव जिस प्रकार आकाश में विचरण करते हैं, उसी प्रकार तिरेपन पासे जुआ खेलने के तख्ते पर क्रीड़ा करते हैं. ये पासे उग्र एवं क्रोधी के भी वश में नहीं आते. राजा तक इन पासों के सामने झुकता है. (८)
Just as Savita Dev, who is of true religion, wanders in the sky, the three-fold dice play on the gambling plank. These dice do not even come under the control of the furious and the grumpy. The king leans up in front of these dice. (8)
