यजुर्वेद (अध्याय 1)
धृष्टि॑र॒स्यपा॑ऽग्नेऽअ॒ग्निमा॒मादं॑ जहि॒ निष्क्र॒व्याद॑ꣳ से॒धा दे॑व॒यजं॑ वह। ध्रु॒वम॑सि पृथि॒वीं दृ॑ꣳह ब्रह्म॒वनि॑ त्वा क्षत्र॒वनि॑ सजात॒वन्युप॑दधामि॒ भ्रातृ॑व्यस्य व॒धाय॑ ॥ (१७)
हे उपवेष देव (यज्ञ में काठ का पात्र जो अग्नि धारण करता है)! आप धैर्यवान हैं. आप देवताओं के लिए किए जाने वाले यज्ञ (अग्नि) को वहन करने की कृपा कीजिए. आप कच्ची चीजों और मांस को पकाने वाली अग्नि छोड़ दीजिए अर्थात् आप इन दोनों अग्नियों को धारण मत कीजिए. आप यज्ञ-अग्नि (गार्हपत्य) को धारण करने की कृपा कीजिए. आप ध्रुव (स्थिर) हैं. आप पृथ्वी पर द्रढ़ता से बने रहने की कृपा कीजिए. आप ब्राहाणों, क्षत्रियों व श्रेष्ठ जाति वालों को धारण करते हैं. हम शत्रुओं के वध के लिए आप को धारण करते हैं. O Upvesha Deva (The wooden vessel who holds fire in the sacrifice)! You are patient. Please bear the Yagya (agni) to be performed for the deities. You leave the fire that cooks raw things and meat, that is, do not wear these two fires. Please wear Yagya-agni (Garhapatya). You are Dhruva (steady). You please stay in firmness on earth. You wear Brahmins, Kshatriyas and superior varna people. We wear you to kill our enemies. (17)
