अथर्ववेद (कांड 18)
उदी॑च्यां त्वादि॒शि पु॒रा सं॒वृतः॑ स्व॒धाया॒मा द॑धामि बाहु॒च्युता॑ पृथि॒वी द्यामि॑वो॒परि॑ । लो॑क॒कृतः॑ पथि॒कृतो॑ यजामहे॒ ये दे॒वानां॑ हु॒तभा॑गा इ॒ह स्थ ॥ (३३)
हे प्रेत! हम दहन के स्थान से उत्तर दिशा में पहले से स्थित तथा कंबल से ढकी हुई स्वधा नाम की पितृ देवता में तुझे स्थापित करते हैं. दाताओं द्वारा ब्राह्मणों को दान की गई पृथ्वी जिस प्रकार ऊपर की दिशा में स्वर्ग का पालन करती है उसी प्रकार स्वधा नाम की पितृदेवता तुम्हारा पालन करें. पुण्य के फल में रूप में स्वर्ग का प्रवर्तन करने वालों की पूजा हम हवि के द्वारा करते हैं. हे देवगण! तुम इस यज्ञ में भाग लेने वाले बनो. (३३)
O ghost! We install you in a pitra devta named Swadha, already located in the north direction from the place of combustion and covered with a blanket. Just as the earth donated by the donors to the Brahmins follows heaven in the upward direction, similarly the father god named Swadha follow you. In the form of virtue, we worship those who enforce heaven in the form of virtue. O Gods! You become participants in this yajna. (33)
