ऋग्वेद (मंडल 1)
प॒श्वा न ता॒युं गुहा॒ चत॑न्तं॒ नमो॑ युजा॒नं नमो॒ वह॑न्तम् ॥ (१)
जैसे पशु चुराने वाला पशुओं सहित गुफा में छिप जाता है और लोग उसके पैरों के चिह्न देखते हुए उसके पास तक पहुंच जाते हैं, उसी प्रकार मेधावी एवं समान मति देवगण तुम्हारे चरणचिह्णों के सहारे तुम तक पहुंच गए. यज्ञपात्र समस्त देवगण तुम्हारे समीप आए थे, अतः तुम स्वयं हव्य का भक्षण करो और अन्य देवों के लिए भी ले जाओ. (१)
Just as the one who steals the animal hides in the cave with the animals and the people reach out to him, seeing the markings of his feet, so the bright and equally beautiful gods have reached you with the help of your footprints. All the gods came near you, so you yourself should eat the havan and take it for the other gods also. (1)

स॒जोषा॒ धीराः॑ प॒दैरनु॑ ग्म॒न्नुप॑ त्वा सीद॒न्विश्वे॒ यज॑त्राः ॥ (२)

देवों ने भागे हुए अग्नि के कर्मों की खोज की थी. यह खोज चारों दिशाओं में की गई. अग्नि को खोजने के लिए इंद्र आदि देव धरती पर आए थे, इसलिए धरती स्वर्ग के तुल्य बन गई थी. यज्ञ के कारणभूत, जल के गर्भ से उत्पन्न एवं ऋत्विजों की स्तुतियों द्वारा प्रबुद्ध अग्नि को छिपाने के लिए जल में वृद्धि हुई थी. (३)
The gods had discovered the deeds of the fledgling fire. This search was done in all four directions. Indra and other gods had come to the earth to find fire, so the earth had become equal to heaven. There was an increase in the water to hide the fire that was born due to the Yagya, which was born from the womb of water and illuminated by the praises of the Ritvijas. (3)

अग्नि बहिन के हितैषी भाई के समान बहने वाले जल के हितैषी हैं. अग्नि शत्रु के विनाशकारी राजा के समान वन का भक्षण करते हैं. वायु द्वारा प्रेरित अग्नि जिस समय वनों को जलाते हैं, उस समय पृथ्वी के रोगों के समान सभी वनस्पतियां समाप्त हो जाती हैं. (७)
Agni is friendly to the flowing water like a well-wishing brother to his sister. Agni devours the forest like the destroyer king of the enemy. When the fire induced by wind burns the forests, at that time all the vegetation ends and the diseases of the earth. (7)

अग्नि बहिन के हितैषी भाई के समान बहने वाले जल के हितैषी हैं. अग्नि शत्रु के विनाशकारी राजा के समान वन का भक्षण करते हैं. वायु द्वारा प्रेरित अग्नि जिस समय वनों को जलाते हैं, उस समय पृथ्वी के रोगों के समान सभी वनस्पतियां समाप्त हो जाती हैं. (८)
