ऋग्वेद (मंडल 1)
शु॒क्रः शु॑शु॒क्वाँ उ॒षो न जा॒रः प॒प्रा स॑मी॒ची दि॒वो न ज्योतिः॑ ॥ (१)
शुभ्रवर्ण अग्नि उषा के जार सूर्य के समान सभी पदार्थो को प्रकाशित करते हैं एवं प्रकाशक सूर्य के समान अपने तेज से धरती और आकाश को भर देते हैं. हे अग्नि! तुम प्रादुर्भूत होकर अपने कर्म से सारे संसार को व्याप्त कर लेते हो. तुम पुत्र के समान देवों के दूत होते हुए भी पिता के समान उनके पालक हो. (१)
The jars of the white-colored Agni Usha illuminate all the substances like the Sun and the illuminators fill the earth and sky with their brightness like the Sun. O agni! You become enlightened and permeate the whole world through your karma. You are the angels of the gods like the Son, but you are their guardian like the Father. (1)

परि॒ प्रजा॑तः॒ क्रत्वा॑ बभूथ॒ भुवो॑ दे॒वानां॑ पि॒ता पु॒त्रः सन् ॥ (२)

वे॒धा अदृ॑प्तो अ॒ग्निर्वि॑जा॒नन्नूध॒र्न गोनां॒ स्वाद्मा॑ पितू॒नाम् ॥ (३)
मेधावी, दर्परहित एवं कर्त्तव्य-अकर्त्तव्य को जानने वाले अग्नि उसी प्रकार समस्त अन्नों को स्वादिष्ट बना देते हैं, जिस प्रकार गाय का स्तन बनाता है. अग्नि यज्ञ में बुलाए जाने पर लोक सुखकारी पुरुष के समान यज्ञस्थल में आकर बैठते हैं. (३)
Meritorious, fearless and knowing duty and non-duty, Agni makes all the food delicious in the same way as the breast of a cow makes delicious milk. On being called to the yajna, Agni come and sit in the place of sacrifice like a benevolent person. (3)

जने॒ न शेव॑ आ॒हूर्यः॒ सन्मध्ये॒ निष॑त्तो र॒ण्वो दु॑रो॒णे ॥ (४)

यज्ञगृह में उत्पन्न होकर अग्नि पुत्र के समान आनंदकारी एवं प्रसन्न होकर संग्राम में अश्व के समान शत्रुओं को भगाने वाले है. जब मैं ऋषियों के साथ मिलकर एकत्र निवास करने वाले देवों को बुलाता हूं तो यह अग्नि स्वयं ही उन देवताओं का रूप बना लेते हैं. (५)
Being born in the yagyagriha, Agni is joyful and happy like a son, who is going to drive away enemies in battle like a horse. When I call upon the gods who reside together with the sages, then this agni itself takes the form of those gods. (5)

विशो॒ यदह्वे॒ नृभिः॒ सनी॑ळा अ॒ग्निर्दे॑व॒त्वा विश्वा॑न्यश्याः ॥ (६)

नकि॑ष्ट ए॒ता व्र॒ता मि॑नन्ति॒ नृभ्यो॒ यदे॒भ्यः श्रु॒ष्टिं च॒कर्थ॑ ॥ (७)
हे अग्नि! राक्षसादि बाधक तुमसे संबंधित यज्ञों का विनाश नहीं कर पाते, क्योंकि उन कर्मो में संलग्न यजमानों को तुम फल के रूप में सुख प्रदान करते हो. यदि तुम्हारे कर्म को राक्षसादि नष्ट करते हैं तो तुम अपने साथी नेता मरुद्गण को लेकर उन्हें भगा देते हो. (७)
O Agni! The raksash obstacles are not able to destroy the yajnas related to you, because you give happiness in the form of fruits to the hosts engaged in those deeds. If your karma is hampered by raksash, then you take your fellow leader Marudgan and drive them away. (7)
