ऋग्वेद (मंडल 10)
अप॑श्यमस्य मह॒तो म॑हि॒त्वमम॑र्त्यस्य॒ मर्त्या॑सु वि॒क्षु । नाना॒ हनू॒ विभृ॑ते॒ सं भ॑रेते॒ असि॑न्वती॒ बप्स॑ती॒ भूर्य॑त्तः ॥ (१)
मैं मरने वाली प्रजाओं में मरणरहित अग्नि का महान् महत्त्व देखता हूं. इनके दोनों जबड़े अलग-अलग एवं दांतों से भरे हुए हैं. ये जबड़े स्तोता को न चबाकर लकड़ियों का भक्षण करते हैं. (१)
I see the great importance of deathless agni in the dying people. Both of their jaws are separate and full of teeth. These jaws feed on the wood without chewing the stotha. (1)

गुहा॒ शिरो॒ निहि॑त॒मृध॑ग॒क्षी असि॑न्वन्नत्ति जि॒ह्वया॒ वना॑नि । अत्रा॑ण्यस्मै प॒ड्भिः सं भ॑रन्त्युत्ता॒नह॑स्ता॒ नम॒साधि॑ वि॒क्षु ॥ (२)
अग्नि का मस्तक गुप्त स्थान में छिपा हुआ है एवं उनकी सूर्यचंद्ररूपी आंखें अलग- अलग स्थानों में स्थित हैं. अग्नि काष्ठों को दांतों से न चबाते हुए केवल जीभ से खाते हैं. प्रजाओं के मध्य अध्वर्यु आदि इस अग्नि के पास पैदल चलकर आते हैं और हाथ उठाकर नमस्कार करके हव्य देते हैं. (२)
The head of the agni is hidden in a secret place and their sun-moon-like eyes are located in different places. Fire wood is not chewed with teeth but only eaten with the tongue. Among the people, Aadhvarayu, etc., come to this agni on foot and raise their hands and greet them. (2)

प्र मा॒तुः प्र॑त॒रं गुह्य॑मि॒च्छन्कु॑मा॒रो न वी॒रुधः॑ सर्पदु॒र्वीः । स॒सं न प॒क्वम॑विदच्छु॒चन्तं॑ रिरि॒ह्वांसं॑ रि॒प उ॒पस्थे॑ अ॒न्तः ॥ (३)
बालक के समान यह अग्नि धरतीरूपी माता के ऊपर बड़ी-बड़ी लताओं एवं उनकी जड़ों की कामना करते हुए आगे बढ़ते हैं. यह धरती की गोदी में सूखे वृक्षों को पके अन्न के समान प्राप्त करते हैं तथा अपनी ज्वाला से वृक्षों को जलाते हैं. (३)
Like a child, this agni moves forward on the mother of the earth, wishing for great vines and their roots. They get the dried trees in the earth's dock like ripe food and burn the trees with their own flames. (3)
ऋग्वेद (मंडल 10)
तद्वा॑मृ॒तं रो॑दसी॒ प्र ब्र॑वीमि॒ जाय॑मानो मा॒तरा॒ गर्भो॑ अत्ति । नाहं दे॒वस्य॒ मर्त्य॑श्चिकेता॒ग्निर॒ङ्ग विचे॑ताः॒ स प्रचे॑ताः ॥ (४)
हे द्यावा-पृथिवी! मैं तुमसे सच कह रहा हूं कि अरणियों से उत्पन्न यह अग्नि अपने माता-पिता अर्थात् दोनों अरणियों को खा लेते हैं, मैं मनुष्य होने के कारण अग्ने देव के विषय में नहीं जानता. हे अग्नि! तुम विविध एवं उत्तम ज्ञान वाले हो. (४)
This is the earth! I am telling you the truth that this agni from the aranis eats up its parents, that is, both the aranis, I do not know about The Agne God, being a human being. O agni! You are diverse and well-known. (4)
ऋग्वेद (मंडल 10)
यो अ॑स्मा॒ अन्नं॑ तृ॒ष्वा॒३॒॑दधा॒त्याज्यै॑र्घृ॒तैर्जु॒होति॒ पुष्य॑ति । तस्मै॑ स॒हस्र॑म॒क्षभि॒र्वि च॒क्षेऽग्ने॑ वि॒श्वतः॑ प्र॒त्यङ्ङ॑सि॒ त्वम् ॥ (५)
जो यजमान इस अग्नि को शीघ्र अन्न देता है तथा हव्य एवं घी से हवन को पुष्ट करता है, उसे अग्नि अपनी हजारों ज्वालाओं से देखते हैं. हे अग्नि! तुम सभी प्रकार हमारे अनुकूल रहते हो. (५)
The host who gives quick food to this agni and confirms the havan with havya and ghee, the agni sees it with thousands of its flames. O agni! You all kinds live friendly to us. (5)

किं दे॒वेषु॒ त्यज॒ एन॑श्चक॒र्थाग्ने॑ पृ॒च्छामि॒ नु त्वामवि॑द्वान् । अक्री॑ळ॒न्क्रीळ॒न्हरि॒रत्त॑वे॒ऽदन्वि प॑र्व॒शश्च॑कर्त॒ गामि॑वा॒सिः ॥ (६)
हे अग्नि! वया तुमने देवों के प्रति क्रोधरूपी पाप किया है? मैं इस बात को नहीं जानता, इसलिए तुमसे पूछ रहा हूं. हे हरितवर्ण अग्नि! तुम किसी स्थान में विहार करते हुए, न करते हुए एवं काष्ठ आदि का भक्षण करते हुए उसे प्रत्येक जोड़ से इस प्रकार अलग कर देते हो, जेसे तलवार से गाय के टुकड़े किए जाते हैं. (६)
O agni! Have you sinned in anger towards the gods? I don't know that, so I'm asking you. O green agni! You separate it from each joint in a place while wandering, not doing it, while eating wood, etc., in such a way that the cow is cut into pieces with a sword. (6)

विषू॑चो॒ अश्वा॑न्युयुजे वने॒जा ऋजी॑तिभी रश॒नाभि॑र्गृभी॒तान् । च॒क्ष॒दे मि॒त्रो वसु॑भिः॒ सुजा॑तः॒ समा॑नृधे॒ पर्व॑भिर्वावृधा॒नः ॥ (७)
वन में उत्पन्न ये अग्नि इधर-उधर गति करने हेतु वृक्षरूपी अश्वों को सरल लता रूपी रस्सियों से बांधकर अपने रथ में जोड़ते हैं. हमारे मित्र अग्नि किरणों से सुशोभित होकर काष्ठ के टुकड़े से बढ़ते हैं एवं उन्हें खाते हैं. (७)
These agnis produced in the forest tie the tree-like horses with simple creeper ropes and add them to their chariots to move around. Our friends are beautified by agni rays, growing from pieces of wood and eating them. (7)
