ऋग्वेद (मंडल 3)
शंसा॑ म॒हामिन्द्रं॒ यस्मि॒न्विश्वा॒ आ कृ॒ष्टयः॑ सोम॒पाः काम॒मव्य॑न् । यं सु॒क्रतुं॑ धि॒षणे॑ विभ्वत॒ष्टं घ॒नं वृ॒त्राणां॑ ज॒नय॑न्त दे॒वाः ॥ (१)
हे होता! महान् इंद्र की स्तुति करो. उनकी रक्षा पाकर सभी मनुष्य यज्ञों में सोम पीकर मनोवांछित फल पाते हैं. धरती, आकाश एवं समस्त देवों ने शोभन कर्म एवं पापनाशक इंद्र को जन्म दिया. ब्रह्मा ने इंद्र को संसार का अधिपति बनाया. (१)
It was! Praise the great Indra. Having got their protection, all human beings drink som in the yagnas and get the desired fruits. The earth, the sky and all the gods gave birth to Indra, the adornment of karma and sin. Brahma made Indra the ruler of the world. (1)

यं नु नकिः॒ पृत॑नासु स्व॒राजं॑ द्वि॒ता तर॑ति॒ नृत॑मं हरि॒ष्ठाम् । इ॒नत॑मः॒ सत्व॑भि॒र्यो ह॑ शू॒षैः पृ॑थु॒ज्रया॑ अमिना॒दायु॒र्दस्योः॑ ॥ (२)
युद्ध में अपने तेज से सुशोभित, हरि नामक घोड़ों वाले रथ में बैठे हुए, सर्वोत्तम नेता एवं युद्ध में सेनाओं के दो भाग करने वाले इंद्र को कोई हरा नहीं सकता. सेना के सर्वोत्तम स्वामी वह इंद्र शत्रुओं की शक्ति सोख लेने वाले मरुतों के साथ तीव्र वेग धारण करके श्रु के प्राण को नष्ट करते हैं. (२)
No one can defeat Indra, the best leader and the two-partimbler of armies in battle, adorned with his swiftness in battle, sitting in a horse-drawn chariot called Hari. The best master of the army, he destroys the soul of The Shru by wearing a strong velocity with the maruts who absorb the power of Indra's enemies. (2)

स॒हावा॑ पृ॒त्सु त॒रणि॒र्नार्वा॑ व्यान॒शी रोद॑सी मे॒हना॑वान् । भगो॒ न का॒रे हव्यो॑ मती॒नां पि॒तेव॒ चारुः॑ सु॒हवो॑ वयो॒धाः ॥ (३)
बलवान् इंद्र शक्तिशाली घोड़े के समान संग्रामों में शत्रु सेना को पारकर वहां जाते हैं एवं धरती-आकाश को व्याप्त करके धनवान् बनते हैं. यज्ञ में सूर्य देव के समान हवनीय एवं कमनीय इंद्र स्तोताओं के पिता तथा भली प्रकार बुलाए जाने पर अन्न देने वाले बनते हैं. (३)
Balvan Indra goes there by crossing the enemy army in battles like a powerful horse and becomes rich by covering the earth and sky. In the yajna, like the Sun God, the havanable and earnest Indra becomes the father of the stothas and the giver of food when called well. (3)

ध॒र्ता दि॒वो रज॑सस्पृ॒ष्ट ऊ॒र्ध्वो रथो॒ न वा॒युर्वसु॑भिर्नि॒युत्वा॑न् । क्ष॒पां व॒स्ता ज॑नि॒ता सूर्य॑स्य॒ विभ॑क्ता भा॒गं धि॒षणे॑व॒ वाज॑म् ॥ (४)
इंद्र स्वर्ग तथा आकाश के धारणकर्ता, सर्वत्र वर्तमान, अपने रथ के समान ऊपर चलने वाले, मरुतों की सहायता प्राप्त करने वाले, रात्रि के आच्छादक, सूर्य के जन्मदाता एवं पूर्वजों की वाणी के समान उपभोग योग्य कर्मफल के रूप में प्राप्त अन्न का विभाग करने वाले हैं (४)

धन-प्राप्ति वाले संग्राम में उत्साहपूर्ण, धनवान्, सकल विश्व के नेता, स्तुतियां सुनने वाले, शत्रुओं को भयंकर, युद्ध में राक्षसविनाशकारी एवं शत्रुओं के धन के विजेता इंद्र को हम रक्षा के लिए बुलाते हैं. (५)
