अथर्ववेद (कांड 11)
प्र॑थ॒मेन॑ प्रमा॒रेण॑ त्रे॒धा विष्व॒ङ्वि ग॑च्छति । अ॒द एके॑न॒ गच्छ॑त्य॒द एके॑न गच्छती॒हैके॑न॒ नि षे॑वते ॥ (३३)
पुरुष के शरीर में प्रवेश करने वाला जीवात्मा इंद्रियों के द्वारा पुण्य और पाप रूपी कर्म पूरे कर के मृत्यु के बाद स्वर्ग या नरक में स्थान प्राप्त करता है. पहले होने वाले स्थूल शरीर की मृत्यु के बाद वह जीवात्मा शरीर त्याग कर अनेक नियमों के अनुसार तीन प्रकार से जाता है. एक अर्थात् पाप कर्म से नरक में जाता है, पुण्य कर्म से स्वर्ग में जाता है तथा पुण्य और पाप से मिले हुए दोनों प्रकार के कर्म से यहां सुख दुःखों को अनुभव करता है. The soul entering the body of the man attains a place in heaven or hell after death by completing the deeds of virtue and sin through the senses. After the death of the previous gross body, that soul leaves the body and goes in three ways according to many rules. One is that sin goes to hell by karma, goes to heaven by virtuous deeds and experiences happiness and sorrows here by both virtue and sin. (33)
