अथर्ववेद (कांड 13)
एक॑पदी द्वि॒पदी॒ सा चतु॑ष्पद्य॒ष्टाप॑दी॒ नव॑पदी बभू॒वुषी॑ । स॒हस्रा॑क्षरा॒ भुव॑नस्य प॒ङ्क्तिस्तस्याः॑ समु॒द्रा अधि॒ वि क्ष॑रन्ति ॥ (४२)
यह वाणी रूपी गौ अर्थात् काव्यमयी भाषा एक, दो, चार, आठ अथवा नौ पादों वाले छंदों में विभाजित हुई हें. इस प्रकार इस भाषा की मर्यादा हजार अक्षरों तक है. ऐसा प्रतीत होता है कि यह सब भुवनों की पूर्ण करने वाली है तथा इस से काव्य के विविध रस टपकते हैं. (४२)
This speech-like cow i.e. poetic language is divided into verses with one, two, four, eight or nine feet. Thus, the dignity of this language is up to a thousand letters. It seems that it is the completer of all bhuvanas and various juices of poetry drip from it. (42)
