ऋग्वेद (मंडल 1)
त्वं राजे॑न्द्र॒ ये च॑ दे॒वा रक्षा॒ नॄन्पा॒ह्य॑सुर॒ त्वम॒स्मान् । त्वं सत्प॑तिर्म॒घवा॑ न॒स्तरु॑त्र॒स्त्वं स॒त्यो वस॑वानः सहो॒दाः ॥ (१)
हे इंद्र! तुम समस्त विश्व और देवों के राजा हो. तुम मनुष्यों की रक्षा करो. हे शत्रुनाशक! तुम हमारा पालन करो. तुम सज्जनों के पालक, धन के स्वामी एवं हमारे उद्धारकर्ता हो. तुम सत्य फल वाले, अपने तेज से सबको ढकने वाले एवं स्तुतिकर्ताओं के शक्तिदाता हो. (१)
O Indra! You are the king of all the worlds and gods. You protect the humans. O enemy destroyer! you guard us. You are the guardian of the gentlemen, the lord of wealth and our savior. You are the bearer of the fruits of truth, the one who covers everyone with your brilliance and the giver of power to the praisers. (1)

दनो॒ विश॑ इन्द्र मृ॒ध्रवा॑चः स॒प्त यत्पुरः॒ शर्म॒ शार॑दी॒र्दर्त् । ऋ॒णोर॒पो अ॑नव॒द्यार्णा॒ यूने॑ वृ॒त्रं पु॑रु॒कुत्सा॑य रन्धीः ॥ (२)
हे इंद्र! जिस समय तुमने पूरे वर्ष तक दृढ़ की गई सात नगरियों को नष्ट किया था, उस समय वहां रहने वाली एवं क्षमायाचना करती हुई प्रजा का सुख से दमन किया था. हे अनिंदित इंद्र! तुमने बहने वाला जल दिया एवं तरुण अवस्था वाले राजा पुरुकुत्स के कल्याण के निमित्त वृत्र का हनन किया था. (२)
O Indra! At the time when you destroyed the seven cities that had been fortified throughout the year, you gladly oppressed the people who lived there and asked for forgiveness. O unsigned Indra! You gave the flowing water and violated the vrithra for the welfare of the young king Purukutsa. (2)

अजा॒ वृत॑ इन्द्र॒ शूर॑पत्नी॒र्द्यां च॒ येभिः॑ पुरुहूत नू॒नम् । रक्षो॑ अ॒ग्निम॒शुषं॒ तूर्व॑याणं सिं॒हो न दमे॒ अपां॑सि॒ वस्तोः॑ ॥ (३)
हे बहुतों द्वारा स्तुत्य इंद्र! तुम असुरों द्वारा रक्षित पुरियों को जीतते जाते हो. तुम वहां से मरुत् आदि अनुचरों सहित स्वर्ग में जाते हो. वहां तुम अशांत एवं शीघ्रगंता अग्नि की इसलिए रक्षा करते हो कि वे यज्ञगृह में अपना यज्ञकर्म पूरा कर सकें. जैसे सिंह वन की रक्षा करता है, उसी प्रकार तुम अग्नि की रक्षा करते हो. (३)
O Indra praised by many! You continue to conquer the puris protected by the asuras. From there you go to heaven with attendants like desert etc. There you protect the turbulent and fast-paced fire so that they can complete their yajnakarma in the yajnagriha. Just as a lion protects the forest, so do you protect the fire. (3)

शेष॒न्नु त इ॑न्द्र॒ सस्मि॒न्योनौ॒ प्रश॑स्तये॒ पवी॑रवस्य म॒ह्ना । सृ॒जदर्णां॒स्यव॒ यद्यु॒धा गास्तिष्ठ॒द्धरी॑ धृष॒ता मृ॑ष्ट॒ वाजा॑न् ॥ (४)
हे इंद्र! तुम्हारे शत्रु वज्र की प्रशंसा के बहाने तुम्हारी महिमा का वर्णन करते हुए अपने उत्पत्ति स्थान में सो जावें. जब तुम प्रहार का साधन वज्र लेकर जाते हो, तब नीचे की ओर जल बरसाते हो और अपने अश्वां वाले रथ पर बैठते हो. तुम अपनी शक्ति से फसलों की वृद्धि करते हो. (४)
O Indra! Let your enemies sleep in your place of origin, describing your glory under the pretext of praising the thunderbolt. When you carry the thunderbolt, you rain water downstream and sit on the chariot with your horse. You grow crops with your power. (4)

वह॒ कुत्स॑मिन्द्र॒ यस्मि॑ञ्चा॒कन्स्यू॑म॒न्यू ऋ॒ज्रा वात॒स्याश्वा॑ । प्र सूर॑श्च॒क्रं वृ॑हताद॒भीके॒ऽभि स्पृधो॑ यासिष॒द्वज्र॑बाहुः ॥ (५)
हे इंद्र! जिस यज्ञ में तुम कुत्स ऋषि की इच्छा करते हो एवं अपने सततगामी, सरलगति वाले एवं वायुवेग वाले घोड़ों को हांककर ले जाते हो, सूर्य अपने रथ का चक्र उस यज्ञ के समीप ले जावें एवं वज्र हाथ में पकड़ने वाले इंद्र संग्राम करने वाले शत्रुओं का सामना करें (५)
O Indra! In the yajna in which you desire the sage Kutsa and take away your ever-moving, simple-moving and air-moving horses, let the sun take the wheel of his chariot to that yagna and face the enemies of Indra who are fighting the thunderbolt in your hand (5)

ज॒घ॒न्वाँ इ॑न्द्र मि॒त्रेरू॑ञ्चो॒दप्र॑वृद्धो हरिवो॒ अदा॑शून् । प्र ये पश्य॑न्नर्य॒मणं॒ सचा॒योस्त्वया॑ शू॒र्ता वह॑माना॒ अप॑त्यम् ॥ (६)
हे अश्वस्वामी इंद्र! तुमने स्तोत्रों से वृद्धि प्राप्त करके ऐसे लोगों का वध किया जो दान नहीं देते थे और तुम्हारे मित्र यजमानों के शत्रु थे. जो तुम्हें आश्रयदाता के रूप में देखते एवं जो हव्य देने के लिए तुम्हारे सामने आते हैं, वे तुमसे संतान पाते हैं. (६)
O Ashwaswamy Indra! You have gained from the psalms and killed those who did not give alms, and your friends were enemies of the hosts. Those who see you as a shelter and who come before you to give you a gift, they will receive children from you. (6)

रप॑त्क॒विरि॑न्द्रा॒र्कसा॑तौ॒ क्षां दा॒सायो॑प॒बर्ह॑णीं कः । कर॑त्ति॒स्रो म॒घवा॒ दानु॑चित्रा॒ नि दु॑र्यो॒णे कुय॑वाचं मृ॒धि श्रे॑त् ॥ (७)
हे इंद्र! अन्न प्राप्ति के निमित्त क्रांतदर्शी होता तुम्हारी स्तुति करता है. तुमने दास असुर का वध करके धरती को उसकी शस्या बनाया था. इंद्र ने तीन भूमियों का दानरूपी विचित्र कार्य करके दुर्योणि राजा के कल्याण के लिए कुयवाच को मारा था. (७)
O Indra! For the sake of getting food, the revolutionary is praising you. You killed the dasa Asura and made the earth his refuge. Indra had killed Kuyavach for the welfare of the Duryoni king by doing a bizarre act of charity of three lands. (7)

सना॒ ता त॑ इन्द्र॒ नव्या॒ आगुः॒ सहो॒ नभोऽवि॑रणाय पू॒र्वीः । भि॒नत्पुरो॒ न भिदो॒ अदे॑वीर्न॒नमो॒ वध॒रदे॑वस्य पी॒योः ॥ (८)
हे इंद्र! नवीनतम ऋषि तुम्हारे अति प्राचीन वीरकर्मों की स्तुति करते हैं. तुमने युद्ध समाप्त करने के लिए अनेक हिंसकों को समाप्त किया है. तुमने विरोधियों के देवशून्य नगरों को नष्ट किया तथा दानरहित विरोधी वृत्र के ऊपर अपना वज्र झुकाया. (८)
O Indra! The latest sages praise your most ancient heroic deeds. You have eliminated many violent people to end the war. You have destroyed the devout cities of the opponents and bowed your thunderbolt on the anti-charity circle. (8)
