ऋग्वेद (मंडल 5)
अद॑र्द॒रुत्स॒मसृ॑जो॒ वि खानि॒ त्वम॑र्ण॒वान्ब॑द्बधा॒नाँ अ॑रम्णाः । म॒हान्त॑मिन्द्र॒ पर्व॑तं॒ वि यद्वः सृ॒जो वि धारा॒ अव॑ दान॒वं ह॑न् ॥ (१)
हे इंद्र! तुमने मेघ को विदीर्ण किया एवं जल निकलने का मार्ग खोल दिया. इस प्रकार बाधक मेघों को विसर्जित किया है. तुमने विशाल मेघ को उन्मुक्त करके पानी बरसाया एवं वृत्र दानव को मारा. (१)
O Indra! You have pierced the cloud and opened the way for the water to come out. Thus the barrier is immersed in the clouds. You released the huge cloud and poured out the water and killed the vritar demon. (1)

त्वमुत्सा॑ँ ऋ॒तुभि॑र्बद्बधा॒नाँ अरं॑ह॒ ऊधः॒ पर्व॑तस्य वज्रिन् । अहिं॑ चिदुग्र॒ प्रयु॑तं॒ शया॑नं जघ॒न्वाँ इ॑न्द्र॒ तवि॑षीमधत्थाः ॥ (२)
हे वज्र के स्वामी इंद्र! तुम वर्षा ऋतु में बंधे हुए मेघों को मुक्त करो एवं पर्वत को शक्तिसंपन्न बनाओ. हे शक्तिशाली इंद्र! तुमने जल में सोए हुए वृत्र को मारा एवं अपनी शक्ति को प्रसिद्ध बनाया. (२)
O Lord Indra of Vajra! You free the clouds bound in the rainy season and make the mountain powerful. O mighty Indra! You hit the vitter sleeping in the water and made your power famous. (2)
ऋग्वेद (मंडल 5)
त्यस्य॑ चिन्मह॒तो निर्मृ॒गस्य॒ वध॑र्जघान॒ तवि॑षीभि॒रिन्द्रः॑ । य एक॒ इद॑प्र॒तिर्मन्य॑मान॒ आद॑स्माद॒न्यो अ॑जनिष्ट॒ तव्या॑न् ॥ (३)
अद्वितीय इंद्र ने अकेले ही हिरन के समान तेज चलने वाले वृत्र के आयुधों को अपनी शक्ति द्वारा नष्ट किया. उस समय वृत्र के शरीर से दूसरा बलवान् राक्षस उत्पन्न हुआ. (३)
The unique Indra alone destroyed the armaments of the warriors, which were as fast as the deer, by his power. At that time, a second strong demon arose from Vritra's body. (3)

त्यं चि॑देषां स्व॒धया॒ मद॑न्तं मि॒हो नपा॑तं सु॒वृधं॑ तमो॒गाम् । वृष॑प्रभर्मा दान॒वस्य॒ भामं॒ वज्रे॑ण व॒ज्री नि ज॑घान॒ शुष्ण॑म् ॥ (४)
बरसने वाले मेघ को वज्र से मारने वाले वज्रधारी इंद्र ने शुष्ण असुर को मारा. वह असुर प्राणियों का अन्न खाकर प्रसन्न था, वर्षा करने वाले मेघ का रक्षक था एवं तमोगुणरूपी अंधकार के प्रति गतिशील था. (४)
Vajradhari Indra, who killed the raining cloud with a thunderbolt, killed the Shushna Asura. He was happy to eat the food of the asura creatures, was the protector of the raining cloud and was moving towards the darkness of tamoguna. (4)

त्यं चि॑दस्य॒ क्रतु॑भि॒र्निष॑त्तमम॒र्मणो॑ वि॒ददिद॑स्य॒ मर्म॑ । यदीं॑ सुक्षत्र॒ प्रभृ॑ता॒ मद॑स्य॒ युयु॑त्सन्तं॒ तम॑सि ह॒र्म्ये धाः ॥ (५)
हे शक्तिशाली इंद्र! तुमने नशीले सोमरस को पीकर युद्ध की अभिलाषा करने वाले वृत्र को डराकर अंधेरे में छिपने पर विवश किया था. तुमने अपने आपको दुर्बलतारहित समझने वाले वृत्र का मर्म उसके कार्यो से जान लिया था. (५)
O mighty Indra! You forced the warrior, who had been thirsty to drink the intoxicating Somras, and hide in the dark. You knew the essence of the vritra, who thought you were without weakness, from his actions. (5)

त्यं चि॑दि॒त्था क॑त्प॒यं शया॑नमसू॒र्ये तम॑सि वावृधा॒नम् । तं चि॑न्मन्दा॒नो वृ॑ष॒भः सु॒तस्यो॒च्चैरिन्द्रो॑ अप॒गूर्या॑ जघान ॥ (६)
निचोड़े हुए सोमरस को पीने से प्रसन्न हुए कामवर्षी इंद्र ने अंतरिक्ष में सुखकारी जल के बीच सोने वाले एवं घने अंधकार में बढ़ते हुए वृत्र को वज्र ऊंचा उठाकर मारा था. (६)
Pleased to drink the squeezed Somras, the kamvarshi Indra had hit the vritra high by raising the thunderbolt, sleeping in the midst of the soothing water in space and rising in the dense darkness. (6)

उद्यदिन्द्रो॑ मह॒ते दा॑न॒वाय॒ वध॒र्यमि॑ष्ट॒ सहो॒ अप्र॑तीतम् । यदीं॒ वज्र॑स्य॒ प्रभृ॑तौ द॒दाभ॒ विश्व॑स्य ज॒न्तोर॑ध॒मं च॑कार ॥ (७)
इंद्र ने जब उस महान् दानव वृत्र को मारने के लिए बाधाहीन वज्र उठाया था एवं वज्र का प्रहार करके उसे मारा था, तब वृत्र को विश्व के सभी प्राणियों से नीचे बना दिया था. (७)
When Indra had picked up the unhindered thunderbolt to kill the great demon Vritra and hit him with a thunderbolt, he made Vritra below all the beings of the world. (7)

त्यं चि॒दर्णं॑ मधु॒पं शया॑नमसि॒न्वं व॒व्रं मह्याद॑दु॒ग्रः । अ॒पाद॑म॒त्रं म॑ह॒ता व॒धेन॒ नि दु॑र्यो॒ण आ॑वृणङ्मृ॒ध्रवा॑चम् ॥ (८)
अति बली इंद्र ने बादलों को रोककर सोने वाले, जल के रक्षक, शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाले एवं सबको आच्छादन करने वाले वृत्र को पकड़ा. इसके बाद इंद्र ने चरणरहित, परिमाणहीन एवं विनष्ट-वाणी वाले वृत्र को अपने शक्तिशाली वज्र द्वारा मार डाला. (८)
Indra, who stopped the clouds, caught the gold man, the protector of the water, the destroyer of the enemies and the one who covered everyone. Indra then killed the stepless, insignificant and destructive-speech-loving Vritra with his powerful thunderbolt. (8)
