अथर्ववेद (कांड 3)
प्राची॒ दिग॒ग्निरधि॑पतिरसि॒तो र॑क्षि॒तादि॒त्या इष॑वः । तेभ्यो॒ नमोऽधि॑पतिभ्यो॒ नमो॑ रक्षि॒तृभ्यो॒ नम॒ इषु॑भ्यो॒ नम॑ एभ्यो अस्तु । यो॒स्मान्द्वेष्टि॒ यं व॒यं द्वि॒ष्मस्तं वो॒ जम्भे॑ दध्मः ॥ (१)
पूर्व दिशा हम पर कृपा करे. अग्नि इस दिशा के अधिपति हैं. काले रंग के सांप उस में रक्षा करने के लिए स्थित हैं. अदिति के पुत्र धाता, अर्यमा आदि इस दिशा के आयुध हैं. इस के अधिपति अग्नि, रक्षक काले सांप, धाता अर्यमा आदि आयुधों को मेरा नमस्कार प्रसन्न करने वाला हो. जो शत्रु हमें बाधा पहुंचाता है अथवा हम जिस से द्वेष रखते हैं. हे अग्नि आदि देवो! उसे हम तुम्हारे भोजन के लिए तुम्हारी दाढ़ के नीचे रखते हैं. दक्षिण दिशा हम पर कृपा करे. इंद्र इस के अधिपति हैं. टेठ़ेमेढ़े चलने वाले सर्प इस दिशा के रक्षक हैं. पितर इस दिशा के दुष्टों का निग्रह करने वाले आयुध हैं. इस के अधिपति इंद्र को, रक्षक टेठ़ेमेढ़े चलने वाले सर्प को और आयुध रूप पितरों को मेरा नमस्कार प्रसन्न करने वाला हो. जो शत्रु मुझे बाधा पहुंचाता है अथवा मैं जिन से द्वेष रखता हूं, हे इंद्र आदि देवो! मैं उसे तुम्हारे भक्षण के लिए तुम्हारी दाढ़ में रखता हूं. पश्चिम दिशा हम पर कृपा करे. वरुण इस के अधिपति हैं. कुत्सित शब्द करने वाला पृदाकू नाम का सर्प इस का रक्षक है और जौ, गेहूं आदि इस दिशा के दुष्टों को वश में करने वाले बाण हैं. इस के अधिपति वरुण को, रक्षक कुत्सित शब्द करने वाले पृदाकू नाम वाले सर्प को और जौ तथा गेहूं आदि बाणों को हमारा नमस्कार प्रसन्न करने वाला हो. जो शत्रु हमें बाधा पहुंचाता है अथवा हम जिन से द्वेष करते हैं, हे वरुण आदि देवो! हम उसे तुम्हारे भक्षण के लिए तुम्हारी दाढ़ में रखते हैं. (३)

उदी॑ची॒ दिक्सोमोऽधि॑पतिः स्व॒जो र॑क्षि॒ताशनि॒रिष॑वः । तेभ्यो॒ नमो॑ऽधिपतिभ्यो॒ नमो॑ रक्षि॒तृभ्यो॒ नम॒ इषु॑भ्यो॒ नम॑ एभ्यो अस्तु । यो॒स्मान्द्वेष्टि॒ यं व॒यं द्वि॒ष्मस्तं वो॒ जम्भे॑ दध्मः ॥ (४)
उत्तर दिशा हम पर अनुग्रह करे. सोम इस दिशा के अधिपति अर्थात् स्वामी हैं. स्वयं उत्पन्न होने वाला सर्प इस का रक्षक है और वज्र इस के दुष्टों को वश में करने वाला बाण है. इस के अधिपति सोम को, स्वयं उत्पन्न होने वाले रक्षक सर्प को और वज्र रूप बाण को हमारा नमस्कार प्रसन्न करने वाला हो. जो शत्रु हमें बाधा पहुंचाते हैं अथवा हम जिन से द्वेष करते हैं. हे सोम आदि देवो! उन्हें हम तुम्हारे भक्षण के लिए तुम्हारी दाढ़ में रखते हैं. (४)
May the north direction be kind to us. Som is the swami of this direction. The self-born serpent is its protector and the thunderbolt is the arrow that subdues its wicked. Our greetings to its swami Soma, the protector snake born himself and the vajra form arrow should be pleasing. The enemies that hinder us or the ones we hate. O Soma Adi Devo! ध्रु॒वा दिग्विष्णु॒रधि॑पतिः क॒ल्माष॑ग्रीवो रक्षि॒ता वी॒रुध॒ इष॑वः । तेभ्यो॒ नमो॑ऽधिपतिभ्यो॒ नमो॑ रक्षि॒तृभ्यो॒ नम॒ इषु॑भ्यो॒ नम॑ एभ्यो अस्तु । यो॒स्मान्द्वेष्टि॒ यं व॒यं द्वि॒ष्मस्तं वो॒ जम्भे॑ दध्मः ॥ (५)
नीचे की ओर वाली अर्थात् स्थिर दिशा हम पर अनुग्रह करे. विष्णु इस के अधिपति हैं, काली गरदन वाला सांप इस का रक्षक है और वृक्ष इस के दुष्ट नाशकारी बाण हैं. इस के अधिपति विष्णु को, रक्षक काली गरदन वाले सर्प को और आयुध वृक्षों को हमारा नमस्कार प्रसन्न करने वाला हो. हे विष्णु आदि देवो! जो शत्रु हमें बाधा पहुंचाते हैं अथवा हम जिन से द्वेष रखते हैं, उन्हें हम तुम्हारे भक्षण के हेतु तुम्हारी दाढ़ में रखते हैं. (५)
May the downward direction i.e. the stationary direction be gracious to us. Vishnu is its ruler, the snake with a black neck is its protector and the tree is its evil perishable arrow. Our greetings to its ruler Vishnu, the protector of the snake with the black neck and the ordnance trees should be pleasing. O Swami Vishnu! The enemies that hinder us or those we hate, we keep them in your molars for your devouring. (5)

ऊ॒र्ध्वा दिग्बृह॒स्पति॒रधि॑पतिः श्वि॒त्रो र॑क्षि॒ता व॒र्षमिष॑वः । तेभ्यो॒ नमो॑ऽधिपतिभ्यो॒ नमो॑ रक्षि॒तृभ्यो॒ नम॒ इषु॑भ्यो॒ नम॑ एभ्यो अस्तु । यो॒स्मान्द्वेष्टि॒ यं व॒यं द्वि॒ष्मस्तं वो॒ जम्भे॑ दध्मः ॥ (६)
ऊपर वर्तमान दिशा हम पर कृपा करे. बृहस्पति इस के स्वामी हैं, श्वेतवर्ण का सर्प इस का रक्षक है और वर्षा का जल इस का दुष्ट निवारक आयुध है. हम इस के स्वामी बृहस्पति को रक्षक श्वेत वर्ण के सर्प को तथा दुष्ट निवारक आयुध वर्षा के जल को नमस्कार करते हैं. हे बृहस्पति आदि देवो! जो शत्रु हमें बाधा पहुंचाते हैं अथवा हम जिन से द्वेष रखते हैं, उन्हें हम तुम्हारे भक्षण के हेतु तुम्हारी दाढ़ में रखते हैं. (६)
