अथर्ववेद (कांड 11)
एकं॒ पादं॒ नोत्खि॑दति सलि॒लाद्धं॒स उ॒च्चर॑न् । यद॒ङ्ग स तमु॑त्खि॒देन्नैवाद्य न श्वः स्या॑न्न रात्री॒ नाहः॑ स्या॒न्न व्युच्छेत्क॒दा च॒न ॥ (२१)
हंस अर्थात् जगत् के प्राण बने हुए सूर्य जल से उदित होते हुए अपने एक चरण अर्थात् भाग को जल से ऊपर नहीं उठाते हैं. यदि वे अपने दूसरे चरण को भी ऊपर उठा लें तो काल विभाजन नहीं हो सकेगा. तब वे कहीं न जा सकेंगे और न दिन और रात हो सकेंगे. (२१)
The swan, that is, the sun, the life of the world, does not raise one of its phases i.e. part above the water while rising from the water. If they raise their second phase too, there will be no division of time. Then they will not be able to go anywhere or be day and night. (21)
